Description

When it comes to crops, Australia chickpeas are among the most important throughout the world. High in nutritional value and versatility, chickpeas are used almost exclusively for human consumption, and are amidst the staple food products in large parts of South-East Asia and the Middle East, among others.

History of Chickpeas in Australia

In Australia, chickpeas were first grown as a commercial crop in Queensland in the early 1970s. Since then, the production of chickpeas has spread throughout the country, and today they are among the principal crops grown in Australia, so much so that the country is now the biggest exporter of chickpeas in the world. In fact, in 2017, Australia accounted for 55% of the world’s total export of chickpeas and raked in $1.56 billion in export value, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC).

Types of Australian Chickpeas

In Australia, two main types of chickpeas are harvested – Desi and Kabuli. Of these two, Desi chickpeas are the majority type with 90% of the total production, while Kabuli chickpeas make up the rest 10%.

Desi

  • Small, angular seeds about 120mg in weight and wrinkled at the beak.
  • Wide range of colours including brown, light brown, yellow, fawn, orange, green or black.
  • Usually dehulled and split to obtain the seed inside.
  • A staple food in India, Pakistan and Myanmar and increasingly becoming a mainstay in Bangladeshi cuisines.
