Description
Coal has played an integral part in the modernisation of the world. On top of being one of the primary drivers of rapid industrialisation on a global scale, coal continues to be equally important today in numerous industries all over the world. If you are looking to import the highest quality coal from overseas, evargo has you covered!
History of Coal in Australia and New Zealand
In Australia, coal was first discovered in Newcastle, New South Wales more than 200 years ago. Mining and exports commenced soon after, in 1799. The popularity of Australian coal rose at an astronomical scale, so much so that within a few years of being exported, it played a significant contribution to European settlement in the country, and almost single handedly drove the development of industries. As a result, the country and the continent itself benefited tremendously.
In New Zealand, the first coal mines were established in Dunedin in 1849. Large-scale coal mining was well underway by 1860, and by 1900 New Zealand’s annual coal production had exceeded a million tonnes, making coal integral to the country’s growth.
Today, Australia is the biggest exporter of coal in the world, and Australian coal is widely regarded as being the cleanest coal in the world. Because of such high standards, coal from the mines of Australia and New Zealand are always in high global demand; the country provided almost 38% of the world’s total coal exports in 2018, which was worth a whopping $47 billion! New Zealand also makes the list of big coal exporters in the world with 1.2 million kilotonnes exported in 2018.
Types of Australian Coal
There are two primary types of coal found in Australia and New Zealand:
Thermal Coal
This type of coal is also known as steaming coal. It is mainly used for electricity and power generation by generating steam in the boilers, and has a lower energy content and higher moisture than Metallurgical coal. It is also used in some ironmaking processes as well as in the smelting reduction processes for producing hot metal.
Metallurgical Coal
Also known as Coking coal, it has a higher energy content and less moisture than Thermal coal, which makes it a prime ingredient in the manufacture of iron, steel and other metals. It produces a high-quality coke, which is a necessary fuel and reactant for primary steelmaking by the blast furnace process.
Thermal and Metallurgical coal can be further classified into two types: Black and Brown coal.
Black Coal
- Black in colour due to a high carbon content;
- Produces coke which is used in steel producing mills;
- Important in power generation, cement manufacturing and a range of other industrial applications;
- Can also have a dark brown appearance.
Brown Coal
- Higher moisture and lower carbon content compared to black coal;
- Mainly used for generating steam electricity;
- Heavily used as a source of fuel for power stations and other industrial organisations;
- Colour varies from yellow to dark brown to black.
