History of Australian Cotton
Cotton has a relatively long history in Australia, as native varieties have been known to grow in the country for thousands of years. However, commercial operations began much later, in the 1800s. The first cottonseeds were brought to the country in 1788, and in 1830 three bags of cotton were exported. After a dip in production in the 1950s due to drought and fluctuating world prices, cotton production blossomed in the 1960s. In 2005, Australia produced a world record crop of 2.9 million bales, which rose to 5.3 million in 2011/12.
Today, Australia is one of the top ten cotton-producing countries in the world, and produced more than 475,000 metric tonnes of cotton in 2018/19!
Our Production Process
The cotton seeds are planted in spring. After the plant grows into green shrubs, they bear the cotton bolls, which contain the fluffy white lint as well as the cotton seeds. After collecting all the bolls, the white lint is extracted, and the cotton is sent off to a cotton gin for processing.
Uses of Australian Cotton
Australian cotton is renowned for its strength and absorbency, which makes it ideal for making textile products such as t-shirts, socks, pants, trousers and underwear.
Moreover, many industrial products such as hotel sheets, army uniforms, tents, tarpaulins, and even inflight spacesuits worn by astronauts are also dependent on cotton!
Cotton fibre can also be woven or knitted into different fabrics such as velvet, flannel, jersey, corduroy, velour and chambray.
In addition to clothes and homewares, cotton is also used in bookbinding, archival paper, coffee filters and fishnets.
Linters, which are very short fibres that remain on the cottonseed after ginning, are useful in the production of bandages, banknotes, cotton buds and swabs.
